Harnessing the Power of Diversity to Grow Healthy Communities

The diversity of a community contributes to its health when differences are celebrated and not merely tolerated. The unique perspectives of our multi-ethnic community members contribute to creativity and innovation. By actively participating in our neighborhoods we foster an environment of respect and form relationships that lead to safety and belonging. We build bonds and bridges to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunity. We have the power and potential to help each other foster and build resilience, thereby promoting health and wholeness for individuals, families and entire societies. But the social and emotional well-being of our communities is at risk. Learn about the barriers and pathways to a strong healthy community and identify how each of us can support and protect our future.

Sufia Azmat is the Executive Director of the Council of Islamic Schools in North America. She has over twenty years of experience in education having served as a teacher and principal. Ms. Azmat is an education consultant, a community builder and an advocate for equal and equitable access for all children.
